China's leaders have declared a "war" on pollution, as they seeks to calm public ire over water, air and soil pollution that often reaches levels experts consider hazardous.

This has seen an increasing number of Chinese cities limit sales of gasoline vehicles, a key contributor to air pollution.

The trend is pushing carmakers to shift their focus towards smaller cities and speed the development of electric vehicles, which are free from similar curbs.

The Hangzhou government said the decision aimed to tackle both pollution and traffic jams.

Hangzhou, capital of the prosperous province of Zhejiang, is a tourist attraction best known in China for its lake, but its luster has been dulled in recent years by a recurrent smog problem.

Five Chinese cities -- Shanghai, Beijing, Tianjin, Guangzhou and Guiyang -- have already put curbs on car sales and more are expected to follow.

Some cities use an auction system to allocate number plates while others use a combination of lotteries and auctions.

The Chinese think that they can have "the good life" and copy Western society, as they copy everything else. Problem is, our way of life won't work for a country with a population of 1.3 billion people packed into cities. That, coupled by the fact that China's coal burning habit is dramatically on the rise, they are literally breathing, drinking, eating poison. China needs to start creating a future for itself that is tailor made to be practical, instead of just copying other cultures.

China's pollution problems have little to do with automobiles and much to do with their government. Even though China has 4 times the population of the United States and is experiencing tremendous growth, their GPD is still only 1/2 of ours. So if it were as simple as GPD = pollution, then the United States should have twice the pollution problem as does China. Restricting the number of new cars sold in big cities does nothing significant for air pollution - sort of like re-arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

If it were only the cars in China polluting the air people breath. What to think about many a factory or plant that's hopelessly out of date? Think what they spew out every minute of the day.

Hmmm... maybe you should have been thinking about this a few years ago China.....

Ted

That is what large American cities would look like without the EPA

China is the perfect place to sell electric cars, but the Chinese are waiting on American innovation.

IF YOU BUILD THE ROADS THEY WILL COME.

Most people read this as a problem of polution, but the real problem is the traffic. Think about this: when China is desperately looking for ways to boost its GDP, why does she restrict the domestic car sale? It's a painful choice that many outsiders would never understand

they just need to invest heavily on solar power. put it on the bikes, on the cars, and on rooftops

Truth Hurts

they do that. i took a train ride from shanghai to beijing. almost every building have some sort of solar powered device on their roof top

Why not horses? they Emmit no Carbon dioxide, can go on sidewalks and will create jobs for cleaning the streets of horse***

Dena

Food requirements. They've having enough issues feeding their own population. Can you imagine the issues they'd have with adding a few million work horses?

AdrianoF

But they emit methane gas.

Truth Hurts

some towns still have donkeys, camels and horses. but they are too slow, and their excrement really smells.

Can you imagine if the city of Los Angeles limited car sales to 80,000 per year?

The main source for heating and cooking in China is coal. Coal is everywhere in China

I don't understand why China's central government wants to bring another 300 million citizens into the already crowded cities. Seems like this will only add to the smog problem and cause real estate prices in the cities to go up.

Ben

trouble is that Chinese people have been watching American films for the last 20 years and the car is a symbol of freedom and the good life for them, for the government the motor industry has been a way of driving the economy forward. It's only now that they are seeing the drawbacks of the beast.

It's really absurd for anyone in Beijing to buy a car, public transport and taxi fares are so cheap.

Truth Hurts

I agree it's absurd. But it's impossible to get a date if you don't have a car. And even if you got a date, how are you going to pick her up? Are you really gonna make her squeeze into a crowded subway with you?

Ohio Engineer

I agree the automobile is a symbol of freedom for the Chinese, but not because of Hollywood. Rather freedom is very rare in China. A Chinese cannot move to a new city, have a baby or have an operation without the approval of his/her government. Consequently, owning and driving an automobile is one of the few ways Chinese citizens can experience some feeling of control over their highly regulated lives.

Stop burning the rice straw - I drove from Shanghai to Xuzhou in 2004, over 600km after the rice harvest and you could hardly across the street with all the smoke. That's a start.
