Chinese presidentXi Jinping wants to put a stop to China’s bizarre building syndrome. Here are the mostoutlandish oddities that have appeared so far

SPACE EGGS

National Centre for the Performing Arts, Beijing

Designed by Frencharchitect Paul Andreu, Beijing’s opera house was one of the first specimens of the space-egg genreto arrive in China.

Galaxy Soho, Beijing

Not to be outdoneby a Frenchman, queen of the space egg Zaha Hadid soon laid a clutch of stripywhite eggs a little further east. It proved so popular with its clients, the Soho group, that they commissioned another batch ofslightly more pointy eggs across town.

Henan Art Centre, Zhengzhou

Beijing might now have a whole basket of spaceeggs, but Zhengzhou, the capital of nearby Henan province, actuallygot there first in 2003 and went one better: golden space eggs. Designed byCanadian-based Uruguayan architect, Carlos Ott, the Henan Art Centre isapparently not inspired by eggs at all, but intended to resemble abstractversions of ancient Chinese wind instruments – the Xun .

Phoenix Island, Hainan

Like a cluster ofsailing boats, these globular totems are the work of China’s own spawn of Zaha, MaYansong of MAD Studio. Part of a luxury artificial archipelago, built off the coastof Hainan Island in southern China, the development was billed as “China’s Dubai,”proclaimed to be a “fierce competitor” for the title of “eighth wonder of themodern world.” But reports say that it’s rapidly turning into a ghost island, as investors rush to offloadtheir apartments following the economic downturn.

Linda Haiyu Plaza, Beijing

Linda Haiyu

Moreof a space caterpillar than an egg (although its designers claim it resembles afish), the Linda Haiyu Plaza squats at the corner of Beijing’s Fourth Ring Road, readyto swallow you into its gaping mouth.

Tianzi Hotel,Hebei

China has a finehistory of carving enormous buddhas, and one hotel entrepreneur has been keento keep up the tradition, erecting a vast trio of habitable gods in the middleof Hebei, east of Beijing. The building takes the form of 10-storey higheffigies of Fu, Lu and Shou, the Chinese gods of good fortune, prosperity and longevity.

Wuliangye Yibinbuilding, Sichuan

It only seemsappropriate that the producer of China’s most potent white spirit, baijiu, has chosen tomonumentalise its liquor in the form of a gigantic bottle building.

Mobile phonebuilding, Kunming

Photograph: DavidMyers/Alamy

Rising above Huancheng Road in the provincial capital Kunming, the 11-storeymobile phone building features button-shaped windows – plus a sinister bluehand, emerging from the ground and clutching its sides.

Piano and violin building, Huainan

No, it’s not Taylor Swift’s dream mansion, but an experimental building in Huainan, centralAnhui province, designed by a group of architecture students at HefeiUniversity of Technology. Locals have allegedly dubbed it “the most Romantic building in China” –though perhaps they don’t know that it currently servesas a showroom for the city planners.

Teapot building,Wuxi

What shape does atourist information centre take in an area famous for its red clay teapots? Ateapot of course, made all the more spectacular by having been funded by thesecond richest man in China,Wang Jianlin of the Dalian Wanda group . The 10-storey pot in Wuxi, Jiangsuprovince, has received the blessings of antique teapot master Wang Jinchuan, who praised the building’s design as “strongly reflecting clay teapotculture”.

Meitan Tea Museum, Guizhou

Wuxi’s pot may rotate, but it’s not the biggest teapot building in China. That sought-after titlegoes to the Meitan Tea Museumin southern Guizhouprovince, which towers 74m. It trounces the previous Guinness World Record forthe Largest Teapot Monument(yes, there is such a category),.

Olympic Park, Anhui

Image: Mei Jikui

Huainan City launched an ambitious plan for an Olympic Park in 2011 with venuesdesigned like a load of massive balls. There would have been a main stadiumshaped like an American football, a swimming pool like a volleyball, two otherstadia shaped like a football and basketball.

Ring of Life, Fushun

Having abandonedplans for an office building and entertainment complex (the local populationwas deemed too small to support such a use), Fushun city planners settled onbuilding an enormous empty metal ring to attract tourists to the region.TheRing of Life houses a viewing platform and is fitted with 12,000 LED lights,*** it hard to miss by night. It was originally intended to include abungee-jumping platform at the summit, but the plan was cancelled when the ringwas found to be too high to jump from. Some have speculated on other uses forthe great ring.

Guangzhou Circle

As if a giant cablereel had rolled into town and come to rest on the banks of the Pearl River,Guangzhou Circle towers 138m above southern China’s largest city like a great copper spool. Housing theworld’s largest stock exchange for raw plasticmaterial, it is the work of Italian architect Joseph di Pasquale.

Sheraton Hotel, Huzhou

Photograph:Sheraton

Like a large doughnut dunked halfway into the waters of Huzhou, in Zhejiangprovince, the Sheraton hotel is another work from Ma Yansong and MADArchitects.

Gate of the Orient,Suzhou

Photograph: Gate ofthe Orient

“It’s just a big pair of pants!” raged localbystanders, as the long legs of the Gate of the Orient were joined togetherwith a majestic crotch on the skyline of the ancient city of Suzhou in 2012.Soaring 74 storeys into the clouds, the office building has been declared thelargest gateway building in the world – and no doubt takes the title of theworld’s largest trouser-shaped building too.Thebuilding has been declared “humiliating” by some locals, who say walking through its gaping arch is “like being forced to crawl between someone else’s legs.”

CCTV headquarters,Beijing

Pedestrians are dwarfed by the CCTV Headquarters in Beijing on February 28, 2010. The futuristic 54-storey building standing 234 metres, or 768 feet tall, for the state-run China Central Television was designed by European architects Rem Koolhaas and Ole Scheeren. The headquarters of China Central Television, has drawnsmutty sniggers and been nicknamed the “big boxer shorts” – as well aslikened to someone squatting above the city, ready to offload a nasty surprise.

Just awesome! What spectacular buildings. This is the second spectacularthing I have seen today. Try this below.

Why not try this panoramic virtual tour of Moscow for another spectacular delight. Ithas got to be the most visually amazing thing I have ever seen on my PC. But ittakes a while to learn how to use the mouse.

Moscow is one hell of a beautiful city, I willhave to go there one day.

In the glass and steel, Galaxy Soho is an awesome sight driving by in ataxi. So too is the CCTV tower to walk around

freespirit86
Some are a little gaudy but on the whole I love this! So imaginative andfun!

Nelson Ricardo
The giant mobile is the worst of the bunch. Most of these re actuallyquite pleasing to the eye.

Xlbfan
I like most of these. Outlandish is better than tacky or faceless as muchof recent architecture in Chinais.

morememoreme
What makes these buildings special is that there is space around them, they can be viewed and appreciated from a distance. The Lowry in Salford was splendid when it could be seen from the endof the Quays. Walking towards it was really inspiring. Now it is hidden behindand dwarfed by a shopping mall, blocks of flats and the BBC Media Centre. Sucha shame.

LemonFall
I’m a Chinese and for long these buildings has been talked about veryoften among people. Some of them may look strange but they are actually veryimaginative. It just doesn’t make sense to me why Xi wants to put an end to it.

pingoergosum
…absolutely wonderful! – but maybe like most of the’radical modernist/brutalist’ concrete emporiums of the fifties and sixties inthe west, not destined to ‘age well’ – never mind at least these buildings makeyou smile or perhaps even think – bravo China!

Sudrac1
As a regular visitor to ChinaI find the daring architecture a delight. My family is part Chinese and I feelthe risks architects take reflect the exuberant and ambitious side of China. A lot ofmy Chinese relatives and friends in Beijinglove the architecture and are proud of risks architects take. (I should addnone of us are architects – these are personal views, not professional ones!)

BPing00003
Many of the buildings are very interesting and light hearted. Some areawesome, such as Phoenix Island, and Meitan Tea Museum.

buildabridge
It’s great everyone can find their own favorite in these buildings. Mineis the Guangzhou Circle;I like the allusion to Chinese culture / history; . Great original and funarchitecture.
