If you came into the world today and could pick your nationality, there are at least 15 better choices than to be born American, according to a studyby the Economist Intelligence Unit. The firm looked at 80 countries, scoring them across 11 variables to determine“which country will provide the best opportunities for a healthy, safe andprosperous life in the years ahead.” The results, mapped out above, are bothsurprising and not.

The study incorporates hard data on facets such as economicopportunity, health standards and political freedoms; subjective “quality oflife” surveys; and economic forecasts for 2030, when an infant born today wouldbe entering adulthood. Even gender equality, job security (as measured byunemployment data), violent crime rates and climate are taken intoaccount.

Here’s some of what I found interesting about the data.

Money can’t buy you happiness, though it will get you 2/3 of the way.

The correlation between wealth, as measured by gross domestic product(GDP) per capita, and happiness is clear, though not nearly as clear as youmight expect. The report concludes from the results that “GDP per head aloneexplains some two thirds of the inter-country variation in life satisfaction, and the estimated relationship is linear.” Only two-thirds!

If you look at the map, you’ll see that the world’s richest countriesscore highly, but not in the top category. The United States and Germany, two of the world’s economic powerhouses, tied for 16th place; Japan ranks waydown at 25th. Britain and France scoreeven worse.

The Middle East offers some greatlessons on money and well-being. The region scores poorly in general, with twoexceptions.

Democratic and developed Israel, which is about as rich perperson as the European Union average, ranks 20th. But the top-ranking countryin the region, at 18th, is the oil-rich United Arab Emirates. Even moretelling, though, is the gulf between the U.A.E. and Saudi Arabia, which for allits oil money scores much lower, perhaps due in part to problems such asrepressive laws or a lower human development index.

The best countries to be born in are small, peaceful, homogenous, liberaldemocracies.

Yes, it’s yet another international ranking on individual well-beingwhere the Nordic countries come out on top, alongside Ireland, Australia,New Zealand and Canada. The top15 also include Austria and Switzerland, which seem to meet similar criteria. The three best places to be born are, inorder: Switzerland, Australia and Norway.

Here’s a surprise: the top-ranked countries also include Asia’s twosuper-rich city-states, Hong Kong and Singapore,as well as Taiwan.I’ll admit to being surprised by the data’s suggestion that a newborn today isbetter off being Taiwanese than American or German, particularly because Taiwan’s agingpopulation and declining birthrate could lead the economy to decline. But Taiwan doesenjoy good political freedoms and improving health and living standards.

There is some interesting variation among the top-ranked countries. New Zealandranks seventh overall even though its GDP per capita is low compared to manyworse-ranking European countries. Singapore, though ranked sixth, isnot a liberal democracy by any stretch, andlife satisfaction in thehyper-competitive city seems relatively low. But it sure is rich.

It’s still best in the West.

In spite of Asia’s miraculous growth and of Europe’seconomic decline, factors such as political rights and health standards keepthe Western world overwhelmingly desirable. Other than a small number ofexceptions, most of which are mentioned above, the top third of the rankings isdominated by Europe and other Western states.

Even Portugal and Spain, for alltheir very real troubles, score highly. A child born today is likely to have abetter life, according to the data, in Polandor Greece — yes, Greece — than in rising economic giants such as Brazil, Turkeyor China.

Poverty, violence and/or lack of freedom define the worst countries to beborn into.

Countries with violence, poverty or political *** all rankpoorly, but the variance within the bottom fifth or so is fascinating. Theworst three countries to be born into, in order from the bottom up, are Nigeria, Kenyaand Ukraine.

Some of the bottom-ranked countries are not actually so poor, such as Russia, whichhas bad records on political rights and public health. Ecuador, backsliding on political rights, is thesole low-scoring country in an otherwise optimistic-looking Latin America.

Though countries such as Indonesiaand Vietnamare projected to show astounding economic growth over the next generation, theyare poortoday.Thismap is a reminder that being born into a poor society, even one that offersopportunities for new wealth, can still mean life-long challenges.

Inequality plus poverty is much worse than just plain poverty.

Three telling cases here are Angola,Kazakhstan and Ukraine, all ofwhich scored much lower than I’d have expected. Both Angolaand Kazakhstan are enjoyingrapid economic growth from energy and mineral exports, and Ukraine is amiddle-income democracy. But all three have severe and worsening problems witheconomic inequality, which in turn are fueling corruption and poor governance.

You’re worse off being born in any of these three countries, accordingto the data, than you are just about anywhere else, including Sri Lanka, a poorhotbed of ethnic violence, oppressive Vietnam, or evenSyria. Pakistan places higher than Angola or Ukrainebut just below Kazakhstan.

Chinais still not a great placeto be born.
The country ranks 49th out of 80, just below Latvia and Hungary. That’s an amazing finding, given that China now has thesecond-largest number of billionaires in the world after the United Statesand might some day have the most. You would think that, with so many Chinesefamilies catapulting to higher status within a society that is itself seeinghistoric gains, Chinawould be a great place to be born in 2013.

The statistics are a reminder that, for all of China’sastounding gains, those gains have not benefited all Chinese equally. Abouthalf of the country is still rural and 128millionarestill below the poverty line. Even in the big coastal cities, the rising costof living, stalled political freedoms and worsening income inequality mean thatthe next 20 or 30 years may not be prosperous for a lot of families.

So, if you’re a Westerner fretting about American decline or Europeancollapse, then if nothing else, know that your children have still lucked intoone of the best deals in history: being born in the right place at the righttime.

One of the bigbenefits of living in Canada,is the health care system, gun control, a moderate population and greatresources.
Another benefit is being next door to America, a great neighbour that hascontributed to the wealth in our country.

Whythere is no mention of Chile...the only country in southamerica in light blue... The constant issue of thiscountry, America is just theUSA...Everybody can see the one of the best countries is Canada and the journalist ignoresit completely. The tendency of looking your own belly button.

The Kenya andKazakstan ratings are ridiculous, coming from someone who has lived in both.

Maybethey should ask some people who have lived in different places?!
Walk through "rich" Singapore, you see unhappy faceseverywhere. Walk through "poor" northern Thailand, you see genuine smileseverywhere. Europe is stagnant - the USA is undersold up there, it mighthave its share of problems most of which are caused by the absence of truedemocracy, but it has individual freedom and endless amounts of land. Chinesemegacities are where the money is today but nobody is happy to live there. Idont have an answer as to which is the best place to live ... but neither doesthe above list. Its absolutely meaningless.

I'm surprised Max Fisher thinks Taiwan's low birth rate woulddecrease the quality of life. The fewer babies there are, the more attentionand economic and environmental resources can be given to those who *are* there. It tends to raise the quality of life, not lower it. Also, Germany and the United States' birth rate are notso hot themselves.
I'm also surprised that Max Fisher is surprised thatChinawould rank low. Chinahas 1.3 billion people. If it's quality of life approached anything near thatof the U.S. and Europe, it'd have the world's largest economy four timesover. Chinahas also been important because it is big, not because the average Chinese isparticularly rich.

Max Fisher
Max Fisher

China is the explanation showing that economic opportunityalone it is not the factor to be make a country the best place to live to live.

I,too, am surprised the Ukraineranks so low.
I, for one, would rather be born in Ukraine rather than most of theAfrican and/or Moslem countries, especially if I were a girl. I'd take incomeinequality, corruption and poor governance over female circumcision, arrangedmarriages and stoning any day

Quitethe opposite. Most Americans were shocked that the U.S. is not the worst country inthe world to be born
