BANGKOK: Thailand’s military junta has said that it wants to widen the country’s railway tracks and expand the network to form transport links with important markets in India and China.
The chief of the junta’s National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) General Prayuth Chan-ocha has said the NCPO’s working plan includes initiatives to repair existing one-metre wide tracks and construct new 1.435 metre wide tracks in parallel.
泰国军政府表示想要加宽铁轨宽度，扩大铁路网络，与印度和中国等重要市场形成交通连接。
由泰国军方控制的泰国“国家维和会”主席巴育将军表示，维和会的工作计划包括修复现有1米宽铁轨和新建平行的1.435米宽铁轨。
The new wider tracks will also be built on whichever routes are necessary to open up rail connections with China, India and other regional countries, he was quoted as saying by local media.
“Today, talks (about transport links) have been held with neighbouring countries. They agree with and like our ideas,” Prayuth said.
当地媒体引述他的话称，新的铁轨也将修建在必要的线路上，用于打开与中国、印度以及该地区其他国家的铁路连接。

“We need wider rail tracks for the future. The present one-metre wide tracks were introduced in the King Rama V period,” he said.
Prayuth said the NCPO has approved a basic infrastructure strategy for the country.
The country’s transport network must link up with other Asean countries and beyond the region later, Bangkok Post quoted him as saying.
“我们将来需要更宽的铁轨。目前的1米宽铁轨是拉玛五世时期引入的。”

The idea is good and worth giving a thought as this will improve trade and business in the Asian region. The only worry is China and Myanmar, both of whom cannot be trusted. There are a lot of things that need to be considered before the project will actually be flagged off. Hope that the idea progresses and does not die.
